History

The literal meaning of Gazettessser is Geo graphical Index or Geog raphical Dictionary. Its scope is very wid e. It is a complete co mpilation of a  country/  state/district and its social, political, forest, industry, importa nt historical places, cu lture and cultural activi ties etc. within a limited range and in a readable manner. The  Gazet teer writin g was started during the British period. This is a very important reference book.

The post-independence district gazetteers were appraised in terms of their content and the political, social and economic dimensions of an independent and rising India were included in the gazetteers as subject matter.

The early gazetteers were primarily conceived to assist the colonial rulers in the administration of their territories. The first series of Gazetteers came out in 1815 by the East India Company. This practice continued even after 1858 and lasted until 1947, during which the Indian administration was under the British government. Realizing its importance after independence, the Government of India continued this arrangement. Till date the District Gazetteers of 50 districts of the state are available with us. But the Government’s intention is to once again write Gazetteers for all the districts of state in a revamped manner and with a new fervor.

Here at the District Gazetteer Department, the work of writing the gazetteer of the districts is done. Although the Gazetteer was divided into 19 chapters but at present it has been amended in new look with 11 chapters. This includes General Introduction, History, Art and Culture, Public and Society, District and Police Administration, Judicial System and other Departments, Agriculture, Gardening, Irrigation and associated activities, Economic aspects, Political aspects and Local Self Governance, Education, Medical and Public Health Services, Tourism, Transportation and Communication and Miscellaneous. It is an important source of complete information about any district.
